24/04/12 Visit to Epping Forest Study Centre

Year 5 braved the cold and rain on Tuesday 24th April and travelled to Epping Forest by coach. Here are some pictures of our day!
Team 4 getting ready for the outdoor Forest Hunt

Forest investigation- measuring the impact that humans have had on the forest

We used a quadrat to find the percentage of an area with / without grass due to trampling

We thought about how bats catch their prey at night through echolocation. They listen carefully to the sound bouncing off moths! Sound pollution can make this difficult as the bats cannot hear properly.

Questions and answers. We learned a great deal in the forest today! Did you know that the size of Epping Forest is roughly equivalent to 7800 football pitches!

A big thank you to Ibrahim's, Ilyas's, Ismail's and Maria's mums who supported us on this visit!

Year 5... what did you learn and enjoy the most? Post a reply using your LGFL London Mail account. Remember, your work is being published on the internet for everyone to see!

Summer Term Project

This half term your homework is going to be linked to your geography topic which is Water. Despite the recent weather, you may have seen on the news that parts of our country, including London, is in drought.
Why is water so important? How do we use water? How does waterfall differ across different parts of the world? How do people around the world have access to water if they do not have a tap at home?

The answers to some of these... and many more of your own can be presented in your own Water project. You might want to use film, photography, poetry, art, ICT to support your project but there must be a written part.
Remember not to copy whole parts of texts from the internet or book. This project is your work!
Both Mrs Bilkis and I are looking for creative and original projects that are very informative!

This project was issued 20th April and is due in on Friday 18th May! That is a lot of time, so please do not leave it until the last minute.

If you need any help please speak to us!

Assembly Song

Hi Year 5.... here are the lyrics for one of our songs for our assembly next week. Please learn the words!

Hero
There's a hero
If you look inside your heart
You don't have to be afraid
Of what you are

There's an answer
If you reach into your soul
And the sorrow that you know
Will melt away

And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive

So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

It's a long road
And you face the world alone
No one reaches out a hand
For you to hold

You can find love
If you search within yourself
And the emptiness you felt
Will disappear

And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive

So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

Oh ho, Lord knows
Dreams are hard to follow
But don't let anyone
Tear them away, hey yea

Hold on
There will be tomorrow
In time, you find the way, hey

Then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive

So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

That
a hero lies in you
Mmm, that a hero lies in you.

100 word challenge

Can you write a short story of an event during the holidays. It can be real or based on your imagination. The important part is that you use great vocabulary and write exactly 100 words!
Post your story as a reply... remember to only use your first name.

Wizard Stories... inspired by the Olympic Games!

Year 5 are very fortunate to be part of a special project aimed at enhancing their literacy skills through drama and oral story telling. Phil and Gary, both who work for Wizard Stories, will be visiting us for 8 sessions which will lead to a shared production with William Morris Secondary School.
Here are some of the pictures from the project:

Our Olympic Hat Project

Year 5 enjoyed creating hats inspired by the olympics. Some children chose to create hats that directly resembled an olympic sport e.g. football or taekwondo while others decided to base their hats on the excitement of the olympic games through firework and abstract designs.

Our new Year group blog

Welcome to our new blog… this blog is ours from now until we leave primary school, meaning that we will be able to look back on our incredible time at school. We are just starting to use this blog so check back soon as we add more content.
